Flu vaccination at GPharmacy Direct

NHS and private flu vaccinations

Whether your vaccination is available through the NHS or privately will depend on your age, health and individual circumstances. If you are unsure which option applies to you, our pharmacy team can help you check.

NHS flu vaccination

The NHS provides a free seasonal flu vaccination to people who are at greater risk of becoming seriously unwell from flu. If you meet the current NHS eligibility criteria, you may be able to receive your vaccination without charge.

Private flu vaccination

If you are not eligible for a free NHS vaccination, you may still be able to protect yourself with our private flu vaccination service. A short suitability assessment will be completed before your vaccination is given.

Who can get a free NHS flu vaccination?

NHS flu vaccination is offered each year to people considered at higher risk from flu. Common adult eligibility groups for the 2026/27 season include the following.

  • Aged 65 or over: This includes people who will turn 65 by 31 March 2027.
  • Certain health conditions: Adults under 65 with certain long-term health conditions may qualify because flu could put them at increased risk of serious illness.
  • Pregnancy: Flu vaccination is recommended during pregnancy to help protect both the pregnant person and their baby.
  • Carers: You may qualify if you receive Carer’s Allowance or are the main carer for an older or disabled person.
  • Household contacts: People living with someone who has a weakened immune system may also be eligible for NHS vaccination.
  • Other eligible groups: People living in long-stay residential care and certain other higher-risk groups may also qualify under the NHS programme.

Not sure if you qualify? Contact GPharmacy Direct and we can help you understand the current eligibility criteria.

Why have a flu vaccination?

Flu is caused by influenza viruses and can spread easily between people, particularly during the colder months.

For many people it causes several days of feeling very unwell, but it can also result in complications such as pneumonia and may be particularly serious for people with certain health conditions.

The flu vaccine is offered every year because circulating flu viruses can change and protection from previous vaccination decreases over time.

Having your seasonal vaccination helps reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell with flu.

Private flu vaccinations

You do not have to be eligible for the NHS programme to consider protecting yourself against seasonal flu.

Our private service may be suitable if you would like a flu vaccination but do not fall within one of the NHS-funded groups.

Before vaccination, our pharmacy team will complete the appropriate checks to make sure the vaccine is suitable for you.

Who might choose a private flu vaccination?

You may want a private vaccination if you are not eligible through the NHS but want to reduce the likelihood of flu disrupting your work, family life, travel or other commitments.

It can also be a useful option for people who simply want additional reassurance during the winter flu season.
